BROTHERS IN ARMS – A History of Queensland's Greatest Rugby Club

Brothers' Old Boys' is Queensland's most successful Rugby Club. With 72 Australian International players, six Wallaby captains, 208 Queensland representatives and 26 Brisbane "A" Grade premierships, the boys from Crosby Park have formed a rich and proud tradition. To mark the occasion of the club's centenary, the club has produced a magnificent book, entitled "Brothers in Arms".

Written by noted "Courier Mail" sports journalist, Jim Tucker, with research and statistics by John Druery and Anthony McDermott, the book is a must for all followers of Rugby, not just those from Brothers. It contains hundreds of marvellous photos, including action shots and premiership teams. It delves into the origins of the club in 1905, when it was known as Christian Brothers and reveals how its colourful history has unfolded over more than a century since. This book is not just an archive of results and statistics, it's a living testimony to the wonderful spirit of the "boys in the butcher's stripes" and the people, on and off the field, who have made it into an Australian institution that is renowned around the world.

People like:
Australia's youngest captain, Jimmy Flynn, who led the Wallabies at just 20 years and 39 days in 1914
Jommy Gorman who, in the period 1919-29 when there was no Rugby Union in Queensland, captained Australia against a touring Great Britain side in 1928
Joe French, who coached the "A" Grade to 5 premierships in the golden era from 1946-53
Administrators Jack Ross and Charlie Dahl, who steered the club towards becoming the first in Brisbane to own its own ground, at Crosby Park, Albion
A tradition of wonderful coaches, from Austin Gralton to Des Connor, Jim Kenny, Ron Price, John Connolly and Mark McBain
A pantheon of great players including Wallaby captains, Tony Shaw, Paul McLean, Rod McCall and John Eales

The club dominated Queensland Rugby to the extent that, in the period from 1971-84, they won 10 premierships – another golden era. This book tells the stories of the memorable matches, such as the 19 Grand Finals against arch-rivals University, of which Brothers have won 10.

There have been plenty of hard times as well, such as when players trained under car headlights and had cold showers before "The Old Green Shed" was erected at Crosby Park in 1951. When the club was in financial stress in the mid 80's club stalwart, Phil Zappala rallied members' support in rasing over $100,000 to bail them out of trouble.

But the spirit of the Blue and White has prevailed throughout, steering the club into smoother waters and on to even more success. Although the Premier Grade suffered a premiership drought from 1987 until 2009, the club boasts over 600 junior players, so its strength is assured for the future. This book is a must for Rugby fans and the prefect Christmas present. Get in early and order your copy
