RUGBY ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS

Richard (Dick) McGruther appointed Vice-President and then Director of ARU

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND COMMITTEE FOR 2010 (November 18, 2009)

The AGM was held at the Club on 18th November 2009 for the purpose of receiving the reports of the President and Treasurer and adopting the financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2009 and the report of the Auditor on the financial statements.

In addition the business of the meeting included the election of Office bearers and the committee and the election of a new life member Ron Ure.

The meeting was attended by approximately fifty members and several guests.

The reports of the President and the Treasurer and the financial statements and auditors report are posted on the web-site for a period of twelve months and you are encouraged to read them.

Clearly the major issue emanating from the reports is the need for continuing income sufficient to meet the increasing costs of running the Club. It is apparent that the Committee can no longer rely on adequate support from the QRU despite the fact that the ARU provides a not insignificant amount of money to the QRU for the costs of running community rugby. A considerable proportion of those costs are incurred by the Clubs and traditionally the QRU has provided a level of funding that has assisted the Clubs in meeting their operating costs.

Brothers Rugby Club has a policy of not paying players as a means of attracting them to the Club however the Committee last year took the decision to expend an amount on developing a Rugby Program, managed by an employee with qualifications appropriate to that task, to ensure that any player who chose to join the Club would be able to be developed as a player to any level they desired.

Continuing income is derived from sponsorship, fund-raising activities and we expect from the successful operation of the Crossbar. The task of the Committee as reported on by Treasurer Des Hogan is to increase the amounts that these sources generate.

The new committee for 2010, charged with this responsibility, will be:

President: Anthony Shaw (elected unopposed)
Treasurer: Des Hogan (elected unopposed)
Secretary : Anthony McDermott (elected unopposed)
Committee: John Diamond
  Jim Frayne
  Paul French
  Ross Grasso
  Gerard Jefferies
  Enrico Rabagalino
  James Windsor

Simon Price did not seek re-election and he was thanked for his involvement during the year.

The financial statements and auditors report thereon were received and adopted.

Ranald Duhig was re-elected auditor of the Club.

The appointment of Ron Ure as a life member had been proposed and seconded to the committee by Jim Frayne and Anthony Shaw and was bought by the committee to the annual general meeting for approval by the members. The appointment was reviewed by a committee of life members and accepted.

David Dunworth spoke in support of the motion and in so doing provided a detailed history of Ron's involvement with the Club of which he has been a member since 1964.

Ron as well as being a player had held the position of committee member and treasurer for a number of years. He and Phil Zappala, also appointed a life member before his untimely death, were dedicated fund raisers for the Club and together established and raised funds by seeking nominations of Perpetual and Foundation members.

Ron and several other dedicated Club members were instrumental in ensuring the survival of the Club during its difficult financial times in the nineties and later. Ron loaned funds which were eventually forgiven, confronted financiers intent on winding up the Club and raised the monies necessary to avoid closure of the football Club.

Ron at times took on the roles of administrator, coach and manager and was assisted at times by his wife in the commercial ventures operated by the Club to raise funds for survival.

Ron's appointment was overwhelmingly endorsed by the members present.

2009 TROPHY NIGHT AWARDS (October 5, 2009)

The end of the season saw the annual 'Trophy Night' a night where the special efforts of certain players, coaches, managers and some dedicated supporters are recognised. A special mention must go to Ant Sauer whose tireless work goes unnoticed, and is overshone by the spectacle, that is the season highlights, that he puts together for the night.
