EVENTS & NEWS BROTHERS HOLD OFF SYDNEY UNIVERSITY CHARGE TO WIN Saturday, 13 March 2010 Queensland 2009 Premiers Brothers held off a late charge by 2009 Shute Shield winners Sydney University to win an exciting Australian Club Championship challenge 36-26 at Crosby Park in Brisbane today. Given the responsibility of defending the title won by Easts over Sydney University in the equivalent fixture in Sydney last year, Brothers rose to the challenge and scored five tries to three in a fast, open game enjoyed by the large crowd at Brothers’ home ground. Brothers led 12-9 at halftime and looked like they would run away with the match at 26-14, but University came charging back to trail 29-26 and had all the momentum with five minutes to play, until a Brothers try to centre Nathanuel Gendle sealed the match for the home side. Both teams were a shadow of the sides that won their respective Premier competitions due to retirements, representative commitments and pre-season rustiness, but they showed enough skill and speed under the new law interpretations to send warning signals to the other teams in their respective competitions. “The new interpretations play right into our hands, we want to use the football, we want to play with width,” said Brothers coach Zane Hilton. “The same with University, they played some outstanding footy when they got quick ball.” Australian Club Championship: Brothers 36 (Trent Jones, James Harvey, Damon Murphy, Alistair McLay, Nathanuel Gendle tries, Dallan Murphy 4 cons, pen) bt Sydney University 26 (David McDuling 2, Matthew Schwager tries, Justin Bosilkovski 3 pens, con) at Crosby Park
BROTHERS MEMBERS APPOINTED TO CRITICAL Richard (Dick) McGruther appointed Vice-President and then Director of ARU During the year Dick McGruther, a life member and former administrator and Club player, was elected to the position of Vice-President of the Australian Rugby Union (ARU). Dick was a former ARU President and therefore an admiral choice for this position. A special mention must go to Ant Sauer whose tireless work goes unnoticed, and is overshone by the spectacle, that is the season highlights, that he puts together for the night. |
